New Belgium Coming to DC/MD/VA

The news, from the DCist, is really only of interest to our local readers.

Beers from Colorado brewer New Belgium have achieved some level of cult status. Part of the reason for this is that despite being the third-largest craft brewer in America, the brewery did not distribute east of the Mississippi until 2009. However, that is all about to change as we find out from DC Beer that New Belgium is seeking to expand their distribution to D.C., Maryland and Virginia some time this fall. The timeline will reportedly depend on the distributors in the localities, but demand may be high enough to force the distributors to respond quickly.

I have not had a chance to try anything from New Belgium, yet, missing it the few times in recent history I’ve traveled far enough west for it to be available. I am looking forward to picking some up this Fall.

New Micros in the Washington, DC Area

Thanks once again to my wife for her greater devotion to newsprint (I am an all digital news kind of guy) for spotting this article in today’s food section of the Washington Post by Greg Kitsock.

It’s New Beer’s Eve in the area, with a half-dozen local microbreweries set to commence mixing malt and hops in 2011.

Who will be first out of the gate?

John and I had already talked with the former head brewer at Growlers, the co-founder of Lost Rhino, not mentioned in the article. I’ve got his card and it has been on our list to bring some audio gear down his way for a tour of the brew deck. It looks like we’ll be able to add several more such visits possibly that offer easier logistics than some of the other trips we’ve been discussing like getting up to Lakewood, NY to see Southern Tier.
